Cooperstown & Charlotte Valley Railroad trip
Sunday September 17, 2006

Some photos of the CACV trip. We had another great day of running on the Cooperstown & Charlotte Valley Railroad. As some of you may know that due to extensive flood damage on the NYS&W Utica Branch we had to quickly find an alternate line to run to make a nice weekend trip. The management of the CACV agreed to allow us to run their 16 mile line on very short notice.

We set on a Cooperstown Junction around 8 am and started up the line right near our 9 am time. Bruce Hodges the CACV Manager and another gentleman followed us up the line and flagged crossings. CACV members Chris and Fran were our pilots for the day.

The line is a little overgrown for the first 7 miles between Cooperstown Junction and Milford. It also climbs at a pretty good rate. At Milford we took a quick tour of the CACV yard and station. They even moved a train for us using one of their Alco locomotives. From Milford we continued on to Cooperstown. Had lunch in the RPO car near the end of the useable portion of the line.

The local tour buses brought us to the front door of the NYS&W's Headquarters where we enjoyed a tour of the railroad's dispatch office. After that another tour bus picked us up and brought us to downtown Cooperstown for about a 1/2 hours worth of walking around an enjoying this small city. Another tour bus brought us back to our speeders.

We returned to Milford where the train was again moved for us and then back down toward Cooperstown Junction. We stopped for the photos just off the south end of the bridge (posted in the photos section) and then continued to Cooperstown Junction. We were off the rails and on the road by 4:30pm.

Again special thanks to the CACV and their staff for making it a great trip, Chris

New York Susquehanna & Western Railway, Utica Branch
Saturday September 16, 2006

Several photos of the Utica Branch trip. It was an enjoyable trip. We had seven cars attending. We even had two teams of flaggers helping our progress. We went north to Utica in the morning running on the Washington Mills Branch and a former O&W branch just south of Utica. This allowed us several more miles of running and a photo op next to a steam engine formerly owned by O. Winston Link. The adjacent railroad hobby shop was also a nice treat.

We got into Union Station just before 1pm for lunch at the Trackside Tavern. We left Utica around 3pm and hightailed it south to Sangerfield making a brief stop and then moved on to Sherburne. We arrived at Sherburne around 5pm turned the cars and headed back north to Sangerfield getting off the rails and on the road a little after 7pm.

It was a great day with only one minor breakdown. Thanks go to our volunteer flaggers, Utica Jack, his son and his friend. And Al Zubal and his friend Mike and Maggie. Without them the trip would have been much slower paced. Special thanks also goes to Utica Jack for arranging the Police escort in Utica, making the arrangements for the restaurant in Utica and suggesting a ride down the branches. Riding on original West Shore Railroad line and New York Ontario and Western rights of way is definitely a rare treat.

The Shad Festival
April 29 th & 30 th

We had two days of wonderful weather in Lambertville, New Jersey. Lots of people asked questions about our group. Donations went well. We were able to demonstrate the use of our cars which is in keeping with our mission statement. The donations received will be put toward the restoration of the Lehigh & New England motorcar which was on display at the Festival. The Black River Railroad Historic Trust were also present and the overwhelming question of the day was, "When will passenger train service return to Lambertville?" Hopefully we can continue to aid the Historic Trust in reaching that goal.
